What are food moths?
Food product moths, also known as kitchen moths or pantry moths, are stored product pests associated with different types of foodstuffs are most often found in food factories, bakeries or other commercial kitchens, but are becoming increasingly common in domestic homes, usually being brought in on dry foodstuffs especially human and pet food products including cereals and grains.
There are many types of food product moth, the most common being Indian Meal Moth (Plodia interpunctella) and Warehouse Moths (Ephestia elutella and cautella), which are primarily found in stored cereals, grains, nuts and dried fruit, but also in cocoa and chocolate products. Another less common species is the Mill Moth or Mediterranean Flour Moth (Ephestia kuehniella) which, as its name suggests, is associated with all types of flours, cereals and baked goods.
Moth prevention is difficult in cases of food moth infestation due to the many opportunities they have to gain access to your home. The best way is to ensure that you buy cereals pre-packaged from recognised sources or brands as they will have the highest quality control to prevent moth infestation.
